An ecumenical church fostering cooperation in ministry in the Reston community and beyond

Christian Education                   Annual Reports

Director of Christian Education:
Billie Sutter ucpbillie@covad.net

Christian Education Ministry Chair:
Ericka Kammerer

OVERVIEW: UCP's Christian Education program includes: Sunday School for all ages, Disciple Bible Study, a very busy Youth Ministry, confirmation, Vacation Bible School, the Preschool Programs, training of teachers, leadership training, training in child protection and safety, preparation for children to participate in worship, Godly Play, parent enrichment programs and Scout Programs. This ever expanding program is possible because UCP recognizes the importance of education in the development of effective disciples for Jesus Christ.

Sunday School for children: Structured classes begin at age 2, with intentional care beginning with our nursery program. There are teams of 3 teachers and 3 assistants for each grade level so the team can work together to cover the year. Training is held each quarter to be sure all the teachers are comfortable with the curriculum and ready for a good experience. All teachers, assistants, youth workers and board members are trained in child protection and safety.

Beginning in April 2008, Children’s Sunday School (for children 4 yrs-6th grade) has a new look. The children will explore the same Bible story for several weeks, using a multi-modal approach to their learning, much like VBS. For their first exploration, children will first dive into the Pentecost story for five weeks, as they rotate through five experiences – one each week. The Sea Squirts (5th/6th grade class), the Sea Stars (1st-4th grades) and the Hermit Crabs (4s-Kndg) will rotate through educational experiences.  Navigators will be available to help the children find their way so the Workshop Captains can get them started in the morning’s exploration.  Check the Superintendent's table for details!

Children in Worship: It has been UCP's focus for several years to better prepare our children to be part of the regular worship experience. To this end, we have Godly Play for the younger children – a very popular program – and Wonders of Worship (WOW) for the older children. These programs occur during the worship time. WOW spends the fall preparing the older children to attend worship with their families, which they do starting in the winter.

Vacation Bible School:  The theme for VBS 2008 is "Rainforest Adventure!" and will be held from July 14-18, 2008 with ages 3 (by January 1, 2008 and able to toilet independently) – 2nd Grade, 9:30 am-12:30 pm.  The Vacation Bible Adventure Crew, 3rd-6th Graders, spent extra time in local mission activities and also enjoyed lunch each day, 9:30 am-3:00 pm.
Registration forms are available on-line or contact the UCP office for more information.

For a reminder of last year's exciting event, see VBS 2007 Photos .

Scouting: There is a long association between scout programs at UCP and our membership. Our staff regularly assists with the God and Country program, and we are honored to be part of special events such as the recognition of Eagle Scouts.  UCP's chartered Boy Troop is #1970; the Scoutmaster is Russ Housley who can be contacted at russ.housley@verizon.net.  The chartered Cub Scout Troop is #340.  The Cub Scout Master is: Dennis Hodges, dennishodges001@comcast.net

Past Youth Group Activity    Youth-Led Worship Services

The Youth Ministry Team plans, coordinates, and implements ministry with the junior high and senior high youth of the congregation and their friends. Youth, their parents and other supporting adults work to call young people into a deeper relationship with Christ through a balance of worship, fellowship, study and mission.

Goals:
  • Continuing commitment to providing nurturing experiences for UCP youth and their friends; including worship leadership, sexuality events, retreats, lock-ins, mission experiences, weekly Youth Group programs, Confirmation class, and Sunday School classes.
  • For more information or to help with activities, contact Karen MacDonald at 703-467-9761 or gfrazer@cox.net or Paul Traunero at 703-860-8090 or traunero@ix.netcom.com  Click on the following link to join UCP's Youth Group on Yahoo! to post messages, receive emails of upcoming events, etc.

Report of yearly activities:

January was busy planning for a ski retreat; the Souper Bowl, a fund-raiser on Super Bowl Sunday which raised $720 for So Others Might Eat; and Sweetheart of a Deal, a major fund-raiser on Valentine’s Day which raised over $600 for the Youth Group’s commitment to fund a scholarship for Ethienne Niyo in Rwanda.  Thanks to a year-long fundraising effort and the support of the congregation, the youth have once again met their obligation to Ethienne by sending $3,000 for the year's school scholarship.

February’s theme was “The Greatest of These is Love,” which was carried out in programs about Relationships and Healthy Self-Esteem in addition to the Valentine’s Day event. The month ended with a Leap Year Party to celebrate the rare event of a fifth Sunday in February.

March's emphasis was “Be Prepared” (an appropriate title for a Lenten month), where the group brushed up on their adult CPR skills and prepared the always creative, youth-led Easter Sunrise service. They also led a worship service and the sermon with photo can be seen at the following: Youth-Led Worship ServicesA Junior High Lock-in and a picnic was also held.

The end of the school year brought new beginnings and fond farewells.  We accepted new confirmands during the Sunday service on Pentecost Sunday completing a year of study and reflection for those eighth graders.  Just one week later, the youth group celebrated its departing seniors with a recognition during the Sunday evening program.  The church also recognized them during worship the following week.

In June a UCP Team helped build Grove Park Christian Church in Kinston, NC - see UCP photo album. A bake sale and car wash was held to raise money for this mission camp.  Two of the youth, Ben Leatherwood and Aislynn Raymond, also went to Rwanda in June with the UCP team.

The summer months gave us a time to build fellowship with one another during special events, such as a trip to an Orioles’ game, and during weekly get-togethers at people's homes, where we enjoyed activities from volleyball to canoeing.  A Lock-In was held in Sept..

On Children's Sabbath the Youth Group led the morning worship service (complete with computerized special effects!), along with numerous other UCP children and young people.  They then put their words into action and joined other Youth Groups in the area for the Reston Interfaith Youth MiniWalk for the Homeless.

In December the Youth Group helped younger parishioners purchase and wrap gifts at the Children's Christmas Shop.  We have a great group of youth who have done great things this year and have a lot of energy to do more in the coming months.

Youth Group Activity
Fund-raiser for Rwandan University Student Scholarship
On Valentine’s Day the UCP Youth Group hosts “Sweetheart of a Deal,” a fund-raiser for our Rwandan University Student Scholarship. It’s a chance for interested parents to go out and enjoy an evening together, leaving their children in the care of the UCP youth and adults. The money we raise will go to Ethienne Niyo, who is UCP’s university scholarship student in Rwanda.

ADULT  EDUCATION AT UCP

Christian education isn’t just for children and youth.  Although there are more Sunday School classes for those ages, adults find alternative times and ways to nurture their spirits at UCP despite space restrictions.

On Sunday mornings, the 7:45 a.m. group discusses class-selected books of the Bible before sharing the Eucharist and intercessory prayer. At 10 a.m. the Adult Bible Class uses Methodist quarterly curriculum in their studies.

Adult Issues Sunday School Class

Adult Issues Class - Adult Issues Class offers opportunities to explore current events, timely publications, and cultural phenomena-- whether of theology, our four denominations, or society in general. All are discussed with reference to a Christian (and particularly United Christian Parish) response. Recent topics include immigration, Andrew Bacevich's book, "The New American Militarism: How Americans Are Seduced by War," and segments of a video series on authors "Listening for God."  View list of suggested topics and send input to: Roxane Hughes adult-issues@ucpreston.org

All Adult classes meet at 10 a.m. at Redeemer on Sundays-- contact CE Director Billie Sutter at 703-620-3065 ucpbillie@covad.net to learn more!

Disciple Bible Study classes offer opportunities to study scripture during the week, either during the day or evenings. Disciple classes form in the fall and complete their specific study in the spring. Contact Billie Sutter at ucpbillie@covad.net or Kathy Kelley at 703-476-1183 katkell400@aol.com or call the church at 703-620-3065 for more info.

Parenting Workshops are held regularly to provide help for parents and grandparents in bringing up children in a healthy Christian atmosphere.

The Men of UCP meet for fellowship, an excellent breakfast, and a time for exploring topics of interest. Join them at Redeemer at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. Women in the Spirit (W.I.T.S.) offers book studies, prayer group, and retreats for all the women of the parish.
